Jen Hebert has been serving the Huntington community since she moved here with her husband almost 30 years ago.
As the director of St. John's Nursery School in Huntington Village, Jen has spent the last 12 years providing a wonderful first school experience to countless children and their families. With a strong background in education from Tufts University, she believes deeply in the power of strong schools and support programs for our youth.
A genuine belief in giving back to the community led Jen to run for the Huntington Board of Education during a very challenging time in the school district. After winning a highly contested election, she served 9 years as trustee, vice president and ultimately president of the Huntington School Board. Her dedication, steady leadership and fierce committment to the students and community helped improve the district. During that time, she helped oversee the expansion of student programs, the reinstatement of full-day Kindergarten, the creation of the Universal Pre-K program and the reopening of the Jack Abrams School as a STEM magnet school.
Currently, Jen is serving on the Huntington Library Board. She's glad to contribute her time and energy to helping such an important community resource.
Residents across Huntington share a concern about the overdevelopment of our wonderful neighborhoods and communities. We all want Huntington to be a welcoming place but we also want our neighborhoods to maintain the charm and small-town feel that brought many of us to the area.
Many Huntington residents also have concerns about the impact that additional housing will have on our schools, environment, first responders and roads. As a former school board trustee, Jen knows firsthand the impact that additional students can have on a school if the district hasn't had ample time to plan for them.
Our current town board seems to be more interested in helping the developers than addressing the concerns of the residents. It often feels like decisions about zoning appeals and development sites were made long before the public had any opportunity to provide input, or have their concerns addressed. Jen Hebert wants to be a voice for the Huntington residents, and address the way these issues are handled.
The other side of the overdevelopment issue is the lack of housing in Huntington for our first responders, single-income earners, young adults and seniors.
As a mother of three sons in their twenties, Jen understands how hard it is for young adults who are just beginning their career to find housing at a reasonable price in the Huntington area. The same is true for her 91 year-old father who would love to relocate from their family home in East Williston to a small, reasonably-priced apartment in the Huntington area.
Jen is committed to finding a way to partner with local developers to look for creative, cost-effective ways to reimagine and renovate some vacant commercial spaces into clean, modern affordable apartments. With so many empty store fronts and office buildings in our township, Jen believes there should be space available to provide housing opportunities for first responders, young adults and seniors without developing precious green spaces or overcrowding our neighborhoods. .
Huntington is home to many successful small businesses that contribute revenue, resources and community spirit to the town. These businesses need support from town hall leadership in order to prosper in these difficult economic times.
Raised by a small business owner who started his local textile sales company more than 50 years ago, Jen Hebert understands how greatly small businesses contribute to their community. She also realizes the impact the economy and inflation has had on many of these business owners and their staff.
As the director of St. John's Nursery School in Huntington, Jen has real time experience running a small business herself. Like so many Huntington business owners, she's challenged with budget issues, staffing, regulations and every day problems like parking.
Jen is committed to being a resource for the small businesses in Huntington, and would value the opportunity to work in partnership with our local business owners and workers.
